Piedmont fire Chief Jimmy Trammel, a 52-year-old retiree, has volunteered with the fire department since 1977, while he was still in high school.

Once he graduated, Trammel worked with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office for several years.

In 1984, he became Piedmont’s police chief, a position he held until he retired in 1991. Since then, Trammel has worked several different jobs around the city, including at a local funeral home and, currently, at a pawn shop near the fire department.

“The guy who owns the store lets me leave for a fire if I have to,” he said.

Trammel said he prefers having a variety of things to fill his days.

“I can enjoy retiring plus doing other things,” he said. “Doing something because you want to do it, it makes a difference.”

The volunteer chief said he plans on sticking around for a while, maybe a few more terms.

“I’m not getting that old yet.”
