The new volleyball season has gotten off to a slow start for the Piedmont Bulldogs.

Coach Grace Strott is confident a little more time on the court together will provide her players the opportunity to gain the cohesiveness that has been missing in early matches.

“I’m just trying to figure out what the right combination is so we can win the area tournament again,” Strott said Tuesday afternoon.

“All my girls have good abilities and good fundamentals.”

Piedmont played at Saks on Thursday in its season-opener.

The Wildcats won 25-20, 25-12 and 26-24 in the best-of-five area match. Riesha Thompson led Piedmont with seven kills and Mallory Roberts, Piedmont’s lone senior, contributed five kills. Bre Green recorded 13 assists.

At Pleasant Valley’s Sandy Hunter tournament Saturday, the Bulldogs were inconsistent from game to game and match to match.

In pool play, Piedmont opened against Donoho and fell 25-16, 25-20.

The Bulldogs faced Cherokee County next and won the first game 25-22. The Warriors won the next two games and the match 25-10 and 15-9.

A 25-21, 25-10 loss to Holy Spirit completed Piedmont’s pool play games.

In bracket play, Ider defeated Piedmont 25-21, 25-18.

“They don’t give up on a ball. They keep fighting and I keep hearing them talk and they’re staying positive,” Strott said.

“It’s just their level of play is not the same intensity as when they first go out after a team.”

For the day at Pleasant Valley, Thompson finished with 17 kills.

Mallory Roberts had 11 kills and eight digs. Libero Torre Roberts recorded 27 digs.

Carlie Flowers had seven kills and two blocks. Ashlynne Rivers contributed seven digs. Green had 20 assists and Kayla Ray had 11 assists.

Piedmont was to host Alexandria and Donoho Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs’ match at Weaver, scheduled for Thursday, has been moved to Monday, September 16, to accommodate Weaver’s homecoming activities. The Bulldogs will play in a tournament at Lincoln Saturday.
