Senior Hunter Pike closed out his athletic career at Piedmont High School at the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 3A state golf tournament in Muscle Shoals on Monday and Tuesday of last week, May 13-14.

Pike, described by Piedmont golf coach Everett Kelley as a hard worker “very determined to excel in the game”, earned his chance to play in the state tournament by qualifying as an individual during sub-state play when Piedmont’s team just missed qualifying as a unit.

“He played great at Silver Lakes. He shot 79 and qualified as an individual to move on,” Kelley said of Pike’s sub-state effort a week before the state tournament. “As a team, we only missed it by 18 or 19 strokes to qualify.”

The Shoals, another Robert Trent Jones Trail course, was the site of the state tournament. Pike shot practice rounds of 77 and 73 on the par 72 Schoolmaser course over the weekend but started the tournament with a triple bogey and a double bogey and finished at 86 Monday.

“He played good golf after that,” Kelley said.

“The next day he came out and shot 84 and played well but hit a couple of shots in the water and got in some trouble.”

Kelley said because of recent rain the greens played slower over the weekend but became more difficult to read as they dried.

“All and all, he had a great tournament up there,” Kelley said, noting that Pike’s place in the tournament had him in the top 25 among the more than 200 high school golfers competing for Class 3A schools. “I think he was very proud to make it that far because he’s worked very hard doing it.”
