Anniston police arrested a man Thursday night after he allegedly choked his girlfriend in a parking lot in north Anniston.

Police charged Michael Huell Walker, 55, of Anniston, with a count of felony domestic violence, strangulation.

Police initially responded to a call about suspicious people at the Mapco convenience store on Lenlock Lane around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a police report. A witness said three people were in the parking lot and that a man was strangling a woman, but fled when two unknown people yelled at him, the report said.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said officers spoke to a man and a woman in the parking lot who appeared to be drunk, and arrested both for public intoxication.

“There was a strong odor of alcohol, and they had trouble standing,” George said. “The officer made the determination they could be a danger to themselves and arrested them.”

George said that during the arrest, the officer noticed the woman had injuries including a swollen eye and scratches on her neck and right shoulder. The woman told the officers her boyfriend, Walker, had assaulted her in the parking lot after they got into a fight when their car broke down, George said.

George said Walker returned to the parking lot while officers questioned the woman, and they arrested him.

The woman refused medical treatment and was released from the Anniston City Jail at 4:30 a.m. The other man arrested for public intoxication was released at the same time, George said.

Walker was being held in the jail Friday morning. No bond had been set as of 10 a.m.
