Anniston police charged a woman with stealing money from a local charity Friday.

Angela McLaughlin Haynes, 35, of Marion, was arrested for allegedly stealing $3,000 from Interfaith Ministries between June and November of last year.

Interfaith Ministries of Calhoun County is a coalition of religious organizations that provides services like utility assistance and temporary housing for homeless residents. The organization is located at 1431 Gurnee Ave.

Martha Vandervoort, executive director of Interfaith Ministries, said Haynes worked for the organization for three years as part of the Meals On Wheels program. Vandervoort called the theft an “unfortunate situation.” Interfaith Ministries is supported by donations, churches and grants, Vandervoort said.

“Our staff has gone through a great effort to make everything continue and we’re looking out for the best interest of Interfaith,” Vandervoort said.

Vandervoort said Haynes was pocketing checks from the Meals on Wheels program.

Lt. Fred Forsythe said staff members noticed money missing from the organization and determined an employee was stealing.

Haynes paid her $10,000 bond hours after her Friday arrest and was released from jail, police said. Haynes has a court date scheduled for Mar. 4.
