Prep basketball roundup: Wheeler’s 3-pointers help lift White Plains

Hunter Wheeler sank five 3-pointers and scored 20 points as host White Plains beat Woodland 70-60 on Thursday afternoon.

The game was played during school hours, which allowed White Plains students to watch their classmates win.

Eli Hightower added 12 points, and Nathan Gilbert contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jerod Guthrie had 10 points, all of which came in the second half.

For Woodland, Andrew Bailey had 28 points.

Anniston 52, Lincoln 44: Qua Frazier had 17 points and five rebounds for Anniston. Quin Jackson pitched in 15 points, and Quinterius Croft had 11 points.

Anniston will play today at Munford.

Wellborn 58, Ohatchee 44: At Ohatchee, visiting Wellborn outscored its hosts by 10 points in both the first and fourth quarters to earn a Class 2A, Area 10 win.

The Panthers’ Devron Taylor led all scorers with 28 points, eight in the first quarter. Taylor, who netted three 3-point shots and was 5-for-6 at the free throw line, also contributed six steals and five assists.

Wellborn’s Corri Tignor and Landon Machristie each recorded a double-double. Tignor had 11 points and 12 rebounds and blocked five shots. Machristie scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Jordan Montgomery had seven points and five rebounds as the Panthers improved to 5-7, 4-1 in Area 10.

Dillon Parker led Ohatchee (4-4, 1-2) with 18 points.

Wellborn will face Ranburne, 4-0 in Area 10, tonight with an opportunity to force a tie for the area title.

Sacred Heart 80, Jacksonville Christian 52: D.J. Heath paced the winners with 23 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists.

Quindarius Williams added 22 points and eight rebounds, and Diante Wood contributed 14 points. Sacred Heart (13-5) will play at home Saturday against Cherokee County.

For Jacksonville Christian, Dakota Crook and Alex Jones each scored 15 points.

Spring Garden 61, Ranburne 56: At Ranburne, three Spring Garden players scored in double figures, led by senior Will Westbrook’s 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Jay Prater drilled four 3-point baskets in the first quarter and finished with 14 points. Jacob Black scored 13 points.

Point guard Will Ivey had six points, seven rebounds and six assists. The Panthers (6-10) will host Woodland on Tuesday.

Girls

Anniston 70, Lincoln 10:
At Lincoln, the Bulldogs continued their dominance in Class 4A, Area 10, racing to a 51-7 halftime advantage.

Quanetria Bolton led Anniston with 22 points, six rebounds and three assists. Rakeema Najiy recorded 14 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists. Taliyah Knox added seven points, three rebounds and three steals.

Now 12-4, including 4-0 in Area 10, Anniston will continue area play tonight at Munford.

Jacksonville Christian 52, Sacred Heart 24: Sarah Crook had 18 points to lead the way for Jacksonville Christian, which is now 9-5.

Elysabeth Morales added 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Joeley Cupp added 12 points. Rachel Russaw passed out 10 assists.

Zainab Sanusi paced Sacred Heart with 14 points.

JCA will play again tonight against Cedar Bluff.

Spring Garden 64, Ranburne 31: At Ranburne, Darian Gaines scored 19 of her 21 points in the first half as Spring Garden opened an insurmountable lead.

Madison Sides scored 11 points and Emory Reedy had 10 points as the Panthers improved to 15-2. Spring Garden, ranked No. 5 in Class 1A, will host 2A No. 1 Woodland on Tuesday.
