Slow as Christmas? Yeah, right.

The annual day of marathon gift-giving seems to sneak up on us faster each year. And if Black Friday advertisers are to be believed, this year was particularly sneaky, stripping the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas of six perfectly good shopping days.

Now here we are, one week till Christmas (just let that sink in for a second), and if you're anything like me, that comes as a shock to not just your daily planner, but your bank account, too.

So what to do for all the co-workers, great aunts and third cousins twice removed you've forgotten about in this whirlwind holiday season? Try one of these DIY foodie gifts.

The following gift ideas, courtesy of Pinterest, are fast (this non-crafter and DIYer managed them all in just a couple of hours) and inexpensive. Many of the ingredients you probably have lying around your house, and you’d be surprised how many of these lovely glass vessels can be salvaged from items currently hanging out in your refrigerator. I repurposed a pickled jalapeno jar for less than it would cost to buy an empty glass container, plus I got to keep the jalapenos — albeit now in a Tupperware container.

Give the gift of...
A great cup of coffee

1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1 candy cane, crumbled (for color)
½-1 teaspoon peppermint extract

Combine water, sugar and candy cane in small saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and pour through a fine mesh sieve into a liquid measuring cup. Stir in ½ teaspoon of peppermint extract to begin, adding the additional ½ teaspoon to taste. Pour into serving container and refrigerate until ready to serve. Wrap with the following instructions: Mix into coffee, hot chocolate or any winter drink for a peppermint treat. Keep refrigerated.

3/4 cup nondairy coffee creamer
1/2 cup cocoa (see Cocoa Ornament for recipe)
3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract

Combine all ingredients. Blend well. Add to taste in hot coffee.

A fun, tasty night in

4 tablespoons cheddar cheese powder (instant mac and cheese packet works in a pinch)
1 1/2 tablespoons sea salt
1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon chili powder

Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl. Wrap with the following instructions: Sprinkle over lightly oiled or buttered popcorn. Enjoy!

4 tablespoons bacon bits (imitation unless storing in refrigerator)
1 packet dry mix Ranch dressing
1 tablespoon minced onion
2 teaspoons minced garlic

Layer dry ingredients in a small airtight container. Wrap with the following instructions: Mix contents with 1 cup mayo and 1 cup sour cream. Refrigerate 1 hour before serving with chips, crackers and veggie slices.

A holiday tradition

4 cups nonfat dry milk powder
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup non-dairy coffee creamer
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 (4 ounce) package instant chocolate fudge pudding

Mix all 5 ingredients in a bowl. If a finer consistency is desired, run mix through a blender or food processor.

Holiday-theme sprinkles
Chocolate chips (your choice — white chocolate chips, mint chips, peanut butter, etc.)
Jet-Puffed Mallow Bits
1 clear plastic or glass ornament (ornament pictured available at Wal-Mart)

Take top off of ornament and clean. When dry, layer ingredients inside ornament using a funnel, beginning with the cocoa mix. Amount and type of sprinkles, chocolate chips and mallow bits can vary according to preference. Replace top. Wrap with the following instructions: Mix contents with 8 ounces hot water. Enjoy!
