Suffice it to say that Calhoun County has joined Alabama’s top bicycle-crazy places.

With the Chief Ladiga Trail to the Coldwater Mountain Trail and the spring races in Anniston and countless other places not listed, the county is home to a growing number of residents and visitors who love to ride.

A word of warning: U.S. bicyclist deaths jumped 8.7 percent last year, officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday. Those that have happened here have been especially painful.

The county’s next big cycling craze should be one of safety advocacy. How about bike lanes in our biggest towns? Sounds good to us.
