Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson said investigators were able to use dental records to match the body to Fuqua. Her death is now classified as a homicide, Amerson said.
“We are obviously shifting gears from a missing persons to a murder investigation,” Amerson said by phone this morning.
Investigators had believed the body could be one of four people missing from the Piedmont area since 1990, including Fuqua. Fuqua was 28 at the time of her disappearance.
Amerson said his office is working with the Piedmont Police Department, the Calhoun County District Attorney’s Office, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force on the investigation.
