The Labor Department this morning announced that 12 Alabamians were successfully convicted this month of unemployment compensation fraud, three of who live in Calhoun, Talladega and Clay counties. The three area residents had defrauded the state for a total of $12,680 in unemployment compensation, the Labor Department said.
Shundreta Buchanan of Jacksonville was tried Nov. 13 in a Calhoun County District Court. An investigation by Labor’s Benefit Payment Control Section determined that Buchanan received a total of $3,165.00 in benefits to which she was not entitled.
Buchanan pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, which was suspended for two years pending restitution and two years of unsupervised probation. She was also fined $100 and required to pay court costs and restitution in the amount of benefits received illegally.
Lakisha M. Hall of Talladega was tried Nov. 8 in Talladega County District Court. An investigation determined Hall received a total of $4,200.00 in benefits to which she was not entitled, according to he Labor Department.
Hall pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, which was suspended. She was fined $100 and also required to pay court costs and restitution for the money she received illegally.
Clifton Heflin of Lineville was tried Nov. 6 in Clay County District Court. An investigation determined that Heflin received a total of $5,315.00 in benefits to which he was not entitled, according to the Labor Department.
Heflin pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months in jail, which was suspended. He was also required to pay court costs and restitution for the illegally received benefits, the Labor Department said.
Nine other Alabamians were also convicted of unemployment compensation fraud this month, according to the Labor Department. They include:
