I know you’ve heard the rule — sequins are after-5 o’clock attire. And for some people, they always will be.

But I love sequins, and every now and again I like to see them before happy hour. In fact, depending on where you work, I think you could be so bold as to throw convention out of the window and see those sparkly reflections in the florescent lights of your office.

Long story short: Wear sequins to work.

I work in an office full of suits, ties and wingtips. Occasionally wearing sequins reminds me that I don’t have to follow the crowd.

I was first nudged into wearing sequins to work about a year ago after lucking into a FREE mint-condition, silk and beaded halter-style top as a “thanks for volunteering” gift. While I loved the colors and sparkles when I first laid eyes on the top, I’ve been stymied for months about how to make it work.

Because an overflowing closet is not my idea of a good time, one rule I like to follow is that if I haven’t worn something in a year, it’s gotta go. So my lack of inspiration meant that the sparkly top’s time was running out.

But as it was coming up on its expiration date, low and behold, inspiration struck.

After one of my marathon conversations with Reese, my creative juices started flowing and, eureka, I figured out how to turn what seemed to be a hard-to-wear clothing item into opportunity.

First things first, I needed a way to make the top weather appropriate. This halter top can work as a stand alone piece in the summer, but it’s pretty cold out there. So enter my trusty white button-down shirt, a workhorse staple of my wardrobe. Layering the halter over the blank canvas of the white shirt makes it a full shirt that can go under anything. I can now wear it under blazers and cardigans. I can dress it up or down by wearing pants, shorts or even a skirt. In fact, I’ve used this trick so much with this and the other sequin tops that have found their way into my wardrobe that no one is really surprised when I show up at work decked out in sequins.

If you still think you’d rather go home than go big with your workplace sequins, start with something subtle like a monochrome belt, or maybe a button-down with subtle sequin, tuxedo stripes (which I do own) and work your way up.

Until next time … keep it thrifty.
