Authorities in Calhoun County Tuesday arrested 29 of 53 people identified in an investigation targeting street-level drug dealers.

At an early-afternoon press conference Anniston Mayor Vaughn Stewart said the operation also netted about 475 grams of drugs, nine guns, two vehicles and two projectors taken from a local school. Authorities decided to conduct the roundup at the end of the school year in an effort to curb drug sales while students are home for the summer, Stewart said.

“Those who bring guns and drugs into our neighborhoods will be brought to justice,” Stewart said.

The Calhoun-Cleburne Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force, Anniston Police Department, Jacksonville Police Department, Oxford Police Department, Calhoun County District Attorney’s Office, and the ABC Board are working together on the roundup, which Stewart called “Operation Safe Summer.”

While the aim of the roundup is to stifle street-level drug sales while kids and teens are out of school this summer, law enforcement officials said the effect of the effort will be short-lived, and will only slow drug sales for a few weeks.

“It’s quiet for a little while,” said Capt. Chris Roberson. “Some will get out. Some will stay in for an extended amount of time.”

Roberson said the majority of the arrestees have been charged with unlawful distribution of drugs. He added that the arrests conclude several months of undercover work through which authorities were able to collect enough evidence to issue warrants for the suspects.

The arrestees were booked into the Calhoun County Jail.
