The key is to set out to try some of those classes. After all, there are Boot Camp classes, where you typically do stations of different type drills, to Piloxing, a cross between pilates and boxing using power and speed mixed with flexibility and core.
Have you heard about all the express classes being offered? People are in such a rush nowadays so up pops Express Abs or Express Legs to accommodate the lunch-time crowd. Why not try a class on a mini-trampoline called Jumpsport? And have you noticed Zumba now has 8 types of classes from Zumba Gold to Zumba in the Circuit?
So with all these types of classes out there what are you waiting on? It can be way more fun getting fit in a class setting than all alone in your basement gym. I recently took a survey of some of the class students at the YMCA and asked them, “What is your favorite fitness class and why?
Abbie: “I love kickboxing and Zumba. The reason I love Zumba is because you can forget you are working out … It is an awesome and fun class. Kickboxing is a fun class too! Love the music and I love that you sweat! I also love Butts and Guts because I am beginning to realize that strength training is much more important than I thought. “
Millie: “Call it ‘ying and yang,’ or a ‘healthy balance,’ an ideal morning of exercise combines two of my favorite yoga and spinning. In yoga we are led in breathing, strength, balance and flexibility training through the varied positions, and ultimately, a quiet mind that allows silence and healing from everyday stress. As I exit that darkened room at the end of each session, I feel empowered to face that day’s challenges. Spinning class provides the cardiovascular workout so crucial to weight loss, as well as increased lung capacity and leg strength. For cardio on the spin bike, the key is increasing the tension on the stationary bicycle, which affords individuals to work on their own level.”
Susan: “The main reason I love all fitness classes is the camaraderie of the class participants, not to mention the wonderful instructors. We work hard but we also laugh a lot and have become great friends. Nothing better.”
Katie: “My favorites are a High Energy Athletic Training (H.E.A.T.) class, Mat Pilates and Step class. H.E.A.T. because the non-stop movement, which is challenging, pilates because it uses my own body weight and there is always room to improve and Step for the cardio.”
Devora: “My favorite class is Mat Pilates. I found definition in muscles I had no idea I even had. My core is strong and I feel it. Zumba, oh wow. I love Zumba! You have a blast sweating off the fat. Kickboxing makes you feel like you can do anything and nothing is impossible — and the class will kick your behind. I can honestly say that my favorite type of class is what I am doing at the moment.”
So whether you are just starting out as a class novice or a seasoned fitness class guru, the sky’s the limit. New classes and ideas are popping up daily. Go out and give it a try and find out what class is your favorite.
