As August municipal elections approach, we deserve certain things from our candidates.

We deserve to know if they are willing to answer questions in an open debate/question and answer forum.

We deserve to know how they will meet the city’s challenges. These include dealing with the city’s shortage of funds, maintaining our safety and security, repairing roads, in particular completing the Anniston-Jacksonville road project and repairing the gutter system along Anniston Street, ensuring adequate garbage collection, repairing and replacing city vehicles, maintaining the city water system, and supporting our schools.

We deserve to know if our candidates will visit our neighborhoods, getting to know our residents and becoming aware of their concerns.

We deserve to know our candidates’ willingness to communicate. If elected, a candidate should return a resident’s telephone call made to city hall within 24 hours.

We should expect our candidates to tell us where they intend to lead the city.

We should expect a clean campaign, focused on plans and solutions to meet our needs and make our city a better place to live.
