The city of Jacksonville will receive a Tree City USA award at 1:30 p.m. at Jacksonville City Hall. Michelle Cole, Tree City USA coordinator for the state of Alabama, will present the award to the city.

Anniston High School is sponsoring a conference titled "The Power of Pink: Mind, Body and Soul" today from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Information will be provided to young females to inspire them to be the best in everything they do. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. of Anniston will serve as hostesses. The public is invited to the event and wearing pink is suggested.

Hard-surface paving of two miles of roadway between Fleming’s Store on the Pelham Road and Weaver was virtually assured today through the cooperation of property owners along the route and county officials. More than 30 property owners have pledged a total of $850 toward the $3,000 project, and more are expected to be added to the tally. Also this date: Today’s visit in the “Do You Know …” column is with Judge Robert Bryan Carr, 53, senior judge of the Seventh Judicial Circuit. He was first elected in 1924 to succeed Judge A. L. Agee, who had resigned, and was reelected in 1928 and 1934. He married Miss Charlie May House in 1919 and they have two children.

Two Anniston teachers have been selected as regional judges for the 1985 National Council of Teachers of English awards in writing. They are Suzanne J. Hobbs of Anniston High School and Gretchen Haught of the Donoho School. Also this date: A letter to Speak Out! from Karen M. Ray, Girl Scout cookie manager over the Saks Service Unit (consisting of seven troops), contends that the Cottaquilla Council is treating her adult volunteers unfairly by sticking them with the cost of unsold boxes of cookies. She said unpreventable circumstances hindered girls’ and grownups’ efforts to make sales this year. “Few parents can afford financial responsibility for unsold cookies as the council has proposed,” Ray writes.
