Alabama legislative panel delays voting on illegal immigration bill

A legislative committee on Wednesday delayed voting on a bill under which an illegal immigrant would be guilty of trespassing, a crime punishable by as much as a year in jail, simply for being in Alabama.

At a public hearing on the bill, supporters said they're tired of illegal immigrants taking jobs that could be held by Alabamians. "We have been invaded, and the invasion continues to this day," said Jerry Frady, a retired teacher from Montgomery.
