PIEDMONT — Take a look at Piedmont’s 5-foot-10 senior lineman-linebacker Cory Sears, and the linebacker part might prove baffling. He looks like a typical offensive lineman for a mid-sized school. But as coach Steve Smith quickly points out, looks can be deceiving.

GADSDEN — There are numerous cliches about sticking with what works, and the Titans seem to believe in them. No. 9 Gadsden City relied on its powerful running game and tough defense to beat Florence 21-7 in the second round of the AHSAA Class 6A playoffs. It's the program's first trip to the quarterfinals since the school was formed in 2006.

CENTRE — It was that kind of game. A game where fumbles on back-to-back possessions didn't get anybody worried. A game where back-to-back nutty touchdowns was the only excitement of the second half. That was, in a nutshell, top-ranked Cherokee County's 49-14 drumming of Fayette County on Friday night. It was the definition of the word overmatched.
