ALEXANDRIA — Neither Alexandria’s Jaron Johnson nor Oak Grove’s Jimnarrius Furlow could be contained Friday night, but it was Johnson and the Valley Cubs who got the last laugh, defeating the Tigers 37-31 in three overtimes at Lou Scales Stadium.

Decatur defenders pull down Oxford s Brent Anderson during the Yellow Jackets 14-7 loss in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs. Photo: Bill Wilson/The Anniston Star Oxford ousted again: Grass takes blame for another first-round exodus
OXFORD — It was no fluky shootout of a game that cost Oxford another first round playoff exit. This wasn’t the night where an underdog emptied the playbook and stunned a Yellow Jackets team lacking in playoff experience. The classic losing formula of penalties and turnovers doomed Oxford on Friday, and the Yellow Jackets lost 14-7 to Decatur in a game they led statistically.

PIEDMONT — There were some noticeable, superficial similarities between the Piedmont Bulldogs and the Pisgah Eagles before Friday’s Class 3A first round playoff game. Each team came into the matchup with 8-2 records. Each team dons the Purdue-esque “P” on its helmets, that if not for different colors are identical logos. But after a few drives, it was crystal clear that these teams were far, far apart. Piedmont convincingly advanced to the second round with a 44-19 win over Pisgah on Friday.

A year ago, the Lineville Aggies skated into the final playoff berth from its region with a lowly 3-7 record and not many expectations. The Aggies didn't let that stop them. They promptly upset No. 8 Sand Rock on the road, and almost knocked off higher-seeded Fyffe. Now, the Aggies, as their region's No. 2 seed, will play host tonight to Fyffe, a team they've met in the playoffs six of the past seven years.

You know how coaches and players always say the postseason is a new season? Everybody's record is 0-0 now. That's my mantra after the brutal beating I took throughout the 10-week regular season in the picks contest. I was even beaten by a ten-year old one week.

ALEXANDRIA — A young Heflin team nearly ended its worst season of the decade with a memorable win, but Alexandria's running game proved too much for the Tigers to handle in the second half. The Valley Cubs were able to erase an 11-point deficit and escape with a 32-29 victory in a matchup of former region rivals.

GADSDEN — The passes were otherwise perfect, but then Gadsden City defensive back D.J. Malone-Huff did his thing. And he did. Malone-Huff batted two passes down deep in the end zone to prevent touchdowns and intercepted another at the start of the fourth quarter, helping Gadsden roll over Fort Payne 42-18 on a blistery Friday night at Titan Stadium.

Before the buzzer ever sounded, Donoho and Skyline had already formed two lines to exchange their "good games." But before the season ever started, senior Taylor Suco knew this day would come. It had to. It just absolutely had to, because this had gone on too long. And Friday night, it finally did. Donoho knocked off Skyline 33-23 to snap a 21-game losing streak, among the longest in the state.
