‘Eat to live’: Local family learns how to eat healthier
OXFORD —The Owens family gathered around the kitchen table, waiting for class to begin. As the winners of a Meal Makeover contest sponsored by The Star, the family was taking part in the first of six classes on nutrition and healthy food preparation, hoping to make it easier to fit into their busy lives.

The day was long, and the mother and daughter were tired. Lynetta Owens and her daughter, Natalie, had just made it home Wednesday when the nutrition instructor from the Calhoun County Extension Service and a reporter from The Star arrived at their Anniston home.

The third Meal Makeover class was the sweetest. Anniston couple Lynetta and Nathaniel Owens made brownies Wednesday as they discussed tips for portion control and grocery shopping with a nutrition instructor from the Calhoun County Extension Service.

One-skillet meals: Owens family learns to mix and match for quick, healthy dinners
Creating a balanced meal can be done in one pan. In the next-to-last installment of The Star’s Meal Makeover class with instructor Sheree Russell of the Calhoun County Extension Service, the Owens family learned how to utilize a master stir-fry recipe to create a variety of quick, easy meals that contain balanced portions of the core food groups.

Five pounds lighter: Meal Makeover classes pay off for Owens family
Five weeks later, the Owens family can see how little changes add up. Without really trying, Lynetta Owens has dropped five pounds, and her daughter, Natalie, has also lost a bit of weight by implementing some of the tips they have been learning during a five-week class taught by the Calhoun County Extension Service.
