Sam Cain knew going into the season Jacksonville had a special team, which wound up going 8-0 against Calhoun County teams and making the quarterfinals of the Class 1A-4A state playoffs. The squad also was fourth in the state rankings, the highest of any girls team at Jacksonville, and won a school-record 16 games.

Jacksonville High girls soccer coach Sam Cain noticed future star Sharon Osterbind at a camp while she was in elementary school and knew then he wanted to coach her.
Cain said that at the time, Osterbind clearly had talent and passion for the game. About a decade later, that hasn’t changed.

Heading into his second year as Oxford’s boys soccer coach, Dwight McDonald wanted a commitment from within the program.
After the Yellow Jackets finished the 2012 season with an 11-12 record, McDonald started conditioning workouts in November, rather than the standard protocol of beginning in January. The plan was for the Yellow Jackets to build a better bond.

Filiberto Ruedas, who plays striker, scored in 16 of the 20 games in which Oxford put up at least one goal, and he helped the Yellow Jackets to their first Class 6A playoff appearance in 13 years.
He finished with a team-high 19 goals and eight assists. As a result, he is The Anniston Star’s Calhoun County boys soccer player of the year.

Judd Smith had the thought long before his family moved to the Wellborn community in 2009.
He was about to start the first of 49 varsity football games he played for his father and coach, Jeff Smith, and he wondered what he should call him on the field, in the locker room and during any football activity.
“I said, ‘I’ll tell you what to call me, call me dad. I’m your dad first, then I’m your coach,’” Jeff Smith said.

Two former Cleburne County players have helped Central Alabama Community College of Alexander City make the National Junior College Athletic Association baseball tournament.
Freshmen Alex Lee and Matt Norton have played a role in the Trojans’ run to their national tournament, which is a double-elimination event and begins Saturday. Central Alabama (38-13) will open at 10 a.m. against Palm Beach State of Lake Worth, Fla.
