The very nature of a “blue dog” spells hypocrisy. Of the two major political parties (Democrat and Republican), an individual desiring to serve in Congress can choose one or the other or claim to serve as an independent. If one takes financial support from a political party, be loyal to that party. If one finances himself and runs under one of the major parties’ banners, then be loyal to that party. Wishy-washy switching truly dubs an idiocy that does not deserve to be financed by any party’s funds.
Blue Dogs claim that they have a right to differ with the Democratic Party on certain issues. That, without a doubt, is true. However, the proper thing to do is debate the issues within the Democratic Party, and if you don’t win the debate, abide by the majority’s decision and stay within the party. To bail out is not the act of a Blue Dog, rather, more likely a Yellow-Belly Dog.
For the State of Alabama, those Democrats who now find yourselves filled with Republican blood and now must switch to that party, write a non-bouncing check to the Alabama Democratic Party to refund the money you received. Honorable men and women would do no less. If you don’t, the Republican Party should not let you become a part of it. If you defect to them, they should be skeptical that you will do the same thing to them.
