Late run gives Jacksonville win, tourney title

JACKSONVILLE — Host Jacksonville outscored Piedmont 11-0 in the final four minutes to capture the championship of the Van Deerman Classic girls division.

Piedmont’s Shequia Ridley netted a 3-point basket with 4:40 to go to give the Bulldogs a 32-31 lead, but 20 seconds later, Lacey Buchanon hit a jumper from inside the paint to start the Golden Eagles’ run.

Buchanon added a layup and two free throws down the stretch. Sharon Osterbind had a bucket inside and a free throw, and Angel Kidd hit two free throws during the surge.

Buchanon finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four steals. Osterbind scored 10 points as did Kenyatta Ervin. Osterbind added six rebounds and four steals for the Lady Golden Eagles (8-4).

Sarah Garner led Piedmont with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Paige Webb added nine points on three 3-point baskets and had six boards.

Ranburne 56, Alexandria 47 — At Jacksonville, Ranburne held off a late Alexandria rally to win in the consolation finals of the Van Deerman Classic.

Julia Daniels led all scorers with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs (8-2) got key baskets in the fourth quarter from Leah Mobley and Amy Lovvorn to offset being outscored by the Lady Cubs 12-7.

Mobley and Lovvorn finished with seven and six points, respectively. Lindy Green added eight, and Gracie Ayers had six points and seven assists.

For Alexandria, Nicole Burgess led the way with 15 points. Devonna Taylor chipped in 11.

Ranburne, which just finished its fourth game in five days, returns to action on Monday against Cedar Bluff in the Jacksonville Christian Christmas Tournament.

Boys

Oneonta 55, Jacksonville 47 — At Jacksonville, Oneonta point guard Keenan Warren scored 19 points, including two 3-point shots and a 7-for-9 effort at the free throw line, to lead the Redskins to the Van Deerman Classic championship.

Ryne Wester added 12 points for Oneonta (10-2), which fell last year to Jacksonville in the title game.

The Golden Eagles (4-8) trailed 40-29 after three quarters. Jordan Shelvin had two 3-point baskets and John Michael Herndon hit a trey from the left corner to spark a fourth quarter rally that cut Oneonta’s advantage to single digits, but the Eagles never gained the lead.

Terencio Delks led Jacksonville with 10 points and added six rebounds. Shelvin, who had three 3-pointers and nine points, also garnered six rebounds. Tyler Ross finished with eight points and seven boards.

Taylor Warner scored all seven of his points in the first quarter as the Eagles took a 12-10 lead.

Faith Christian 86, Woodland 85 — At Jacksonville, in the Van Deerman Classic consolation game, in the closing stages, Zach Owens passed to Stephen Emerson who scored on a layup with four seconds remianing to give Faith the win.

While a layup won it for the Lions, their outside shooting proved to be the difference. Faith Christian was 9-for-11 from outside the arc in the second half and rallied to defeat the Bobcats, who led 39-30 at halftime.

Owens scored 32 points, 28 in the second half when he connected for five treys. Jackson Fields and Cole Parks each had a pair of 3-pointers in the second half. Parks finished with 19 points and Fields had 13 points. Alex Sills had 10 points for Faith (7-6).

Five players accounted for all of Woodland’s points. Stephen Strain led with 26 points. Ricky Stephens had 20 points. Zach Barron scored 19. Trey Fetner and John Wes Adcock had 10 points apiece.
