The name of our second month of the year is derived from the Latin word februa, signifying the festivals of purification celebrated in ancient Rome during February.

Notable American holidays celebrated in February include the birthdays of the American Presidents Abraham Lincoln on the 12th and George Washington on the 22nd. What would be a significant festival of purification for the current administration to promote before the next leap year? What about a rational approach to gun control by stopping the Glock?

This semiautomatic handgun has been described as “a sleek, efficient killing machine” only because of our nation’s insane refusal to impose reasonable control of assault weapons.

Strict gun-control laws in Australia, Britain and Canada might well be considered for the United States of America.

Unfortunately, the National Rifle Association and the gun lobby have essentially won the debate over gun control. Among politicians, Democrats and Republicans, an NRA endorsement is highly coveted.

As a former member of the NRA, I think it’s time for the association to exert its powerful influence to stop what leaders in many countries call genocide. I’ll consider rejoining it if and when it elects to curb flying bullets in shopping malls, streets and classrooms.

Constructive leadership is overdue. On Presidents Day 2011, let’s resolve to confront the madness.
