An Anniston man was in police custody Monday, charged with shooting a 24-year-old woman in the leg and lower abdomen area.

Walter Lee Coleman, 50, was arrested on felony first-degree assault charges Monday morning, a police report shows.

Lt. Rocky Stemen said officers responded to a call to a home in the 400 block of West 22nd Street just after noon Sunday.

Once there, police discovered a woman with gunshot wounds in her leg and abdomen area. The 24-year-old was a resident of the home, Stemen said.

She was taken to Regional Medical Center for treatment, investigators said.

After a preliminary investigation, Stemen said, police pegged Coleman as their main suspect and said a small-caliber revolver was used in the shooting.

Coleman was in the Anniston City Jail Monday on a $25,000 bond.
