Bufus Lee Tatum, 64, was in police custody at the Calhoun County Jail Wednesday, being held without bond.
After a three-day trial, a jury found Tatum guilty of attempting to kill Anniston resident John Robinson, 49, during a September 2009 altercation in the 3400 block of Noble Street.
Sheila Field, the lead prosecutor in the case, said that sometime during the afternoon of Sept. 9, 2009, Tatum used a gun to fire multiple rounds at Robinson.
One of those rounds hit Robinson in the back, almost causing him to lose his life, Field said.
The prosecutor said Tatum shot Robinson over a monetary dispute.
Reached Wednesday, Tatum’s defense attorney Nathaniel Owens said he did not wish to comment on the case, because he was busy preparing for Tatum’s June 30 sentencing.
Tatum’s trial was held in Circuit Judge Debra Jones’ courtroom, where a jury deliberated for a little more than an hour and a half before returning a guilty verdict Wednesday.
Under Alabama law, attempted murder is Class A felony, which carries a sentence of 10 to 99 years in prison.
