Social Security and its mistakes

It’s bad enough that we may get only 77 percent of our Social Security checks if its trust fund runs out of money in the future. On top of that, some people are being slammed by mistakes the system makes.

A lady friend I know who is receiving food stamps and is disabled is living a nightmare. She received a lump-sum payment from Social Security of $6,500 due to her late husband. A phone call to the Social Security office confirmed that she could spend the money anyway she wanted to. She then went and bought much-needed items. Shortly after, she said she received a letter from Social Security that said it had made a mistake and overpaid her. The Social Security office now is taking $300 out of her small check for a year to balance its mistake. It is not acceptable that this lady, who is taking care of two of her grandchildren that live with her, must now count pennies.

Why do we as citizens have to suffer for the mistakes Social Security makes?

I am sure this is not an isolated case. President Obama needs to have a second look at the already shaky system and help prevent people from being run over by Social Security.

Seniors who only have that one check to live on should get special attention.
