The hypocrisy of the GOP and the Tea Party wanting to pass a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution is astonishing. Not only did Republicans go along many times to increase the debt limit under President George W. Bush, but they also pressed for a huge increase in Medicare with the prescription drug benefit.

This unfunded obligation created a larger financial challenge than Social Security. In addition, they launched the Department of Homeland Security, one of the largest federal government expansions in the last 50 years. Add to this the unfunded war in Iraq, the Bush-era tax cuts and the economic downturn, which started in 2008 on their watch, and the GOP is right.

Washington has a spending problem that Republicans created in the last decade. The question is can Barack Obama continue to turn things around like Bill Clinton did after George H.W. Bush’s and Ronald Reagan’s spending sprees?
