Carter was an outspoken racist speechwriter for Gov. George Wallace in 1962. Carter also founded a Ku Klux Klan organization. Later in life, Carter moved to Texas and began writing under the pseudonym Forrest Carter. The Education of Little Tree, which spent many weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, was written as a memoir of an orphaned Native American boy learning the way of the Cherokee. Carter died in 1979, and The Education of Little Tree was exposed as a fake in 1991. The Reconstruction of Asa Carter examines how Carter could portray two people at once, and why so many Americans fell in love with Carter’s portrayal of his Cherokee self.
