Heflin city officials are aiming tonight to amend and strengthen their recently passed ban on synthetic marijuana products.

At its last meeting, the Heflin City Council passed an ordinance banning specific compounds found in and associated with “synthetic marijuana” products commonly called “spice.” The five compounds mentioned in the ordinance are already listed as controlled substances by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.

Heflin Mayor Anna Berry said the proposed amendment to be considered at tonight’s meeting is taken from a similar measure passed last week in Oxford. The additional wording would ban “any non prescription … substance … whose affects mimic marijuana.”

After Heflin passed its measure two weeks ago, and Oxford and Jacksonville have since followed suit. Anniston’s City Council will also discuss the possibility of an anti-spice ordinance at its meeting tonight.
