Store ‘n’ Go USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive by Verbatim —$139.99 (1TB); $119.99 (750GB); $89.99 (500GB)

In the age of cloud computing, the portable hard drive has taken a bit of a hit. After all, carrying around yet another device can be a bit of a hassle. Especially when you consider all the online storage options like DropBox, Box.net and the recently released iCloud.

Still, the demand for physical, offline storage is real. Verbatim hopes to help those people out with the Store ‘n’ Go portable hard drive.

The product is available in 500 gigabyte, 750 gigabyte and one terabyte sizes. Verbatim claims the smallest model can hold up to 166,600 pictures, 125,000 songs or 125 hours of video. Obviously, file size plays a roll in the total, but that is an impressive amount nonetheless.

Compatibility is key, and the Store ‘n’ Go shines in this category. Windows, Mac and Linux devices will all work with this product.

The best feature is support for USB 3.0, which is incredibly fast when it comes to file transfer. Fear not if you do not have a 3.0 socket on your computer, as support for USB 2.0 is available as well.

Nero BackItUp & Burn Essentials is already on the hard drive when purchased. This Windows-only software provides users with automatic storage recovery if something were to go wrong.

Speaking of problems, the Store ‘n’ Go comes complete with a seven-year warranty.

My testing with the piano-black hard drive was positive. Files moved quickly due to the 3.0 support, especially when compared to using a cloud-based solution like DropBox.

The Store ‘n’ Go is a little pricey for the size, but dual USB support and full operating system compatibility make the cost worthwhile.

I’ve always preferred the cloud to USB storage devices and portable hard drives. If you’re like me, I’d opt for a smaller portable storage device.

Those that prefer an offline storage solution can’t go wrong with the Store ‘n’ Go.
