A Calhoun County man was killed when a school bus crashed into a pickup truck on Alexandria-Jacksonville Highway this afternoon, according to Jacksonville police and the county coroner.

Coroner Pat Brown said Matthew Coulson, 27, was killed in the accident, which occurred at the intersection of Alexandria-Jacksonville Highway and High Plateau Drive near the Waterford Valley Estates subdivision.

Coulson was the driver of the pickup truck, police said.

Jacksonville police said the wreck was reported to them at 2:30 p.m.

Brown said the bus was carrying 10 or 11 people, most of them members of the Alexandria ninth-grade boys basketball team.

Brown said some occupants of the bus may have had minor injuries.

Staff at Jacksonville Medical Center and at Regional Medical Center in Anniston said they had treated no students involved in the crash.

Attempts to reach school officials this afternoon have been unsuccessful. Calhoun County Schools are out for winter break, though some sports teams are participating in tournaments today.

The Star will post more details as they become available.
