Three years ago, Coach Nick Saban took over the reigns of a struggling state football team that had lots of winning history under the guidance of Bear Bryant, who adorns more walls in people’s homes here than Jesus Christ.
Yes, football in this state is a religion and Alabama football is God. Now I know how those crazy Alabama fans feel when reminiscing about “back in the day.” Now I know: Coach Nick Saban is the real deal. Raising the dead from the ashes like the mythological Phoenix — he has restored Alabama football to what it was “back in the day.”
When he retires from coaching, he’s a shoe-in for guv’ner of the sovereign state of Alabama. Roll Tide, and congrats to the players, coaches, friends and family who have always kept the faith. (Overheard at a NASCAR race at Talladega: “You got to believe!”)
