Highs and lows

• Rick Santorum captured 51 percent of the vote in Lawrence County, his largest percentage in the state.

• Santorum’s worst showing came in Bullock County, with only 17 percent.

• Mitt Romney did best in Montgomery and Baldwin counties with 37 percent and 36 percent, respectively.

• Romney’s worst total came in Lawrence, where he won 18 percent of the vote. His second worst was Cleburne with 19 percent.

• Forty-three percent of Bullock County voters favored Newt Gingrich, high highest total of the night.

• His worst showing was 24 percent in Lauderdale.

• Cleburne, Madison and Lee counties are Ron Paul country; the Texan won 7 percent of the vote in each of those counties.

• Paul’s lowest totals — 1 percent — came in Wilcox and Choctaw.

Exit polls

• The Washington Post reported that exit polling of Alabama voters revealed Romney’s strongest segment of the population was among senior citizens, where he had a 10-point advantage over Santorum. The other age groups — 18-29, 30-445, 45-64 — were dominated by Santorum.

• Romney secured the votes of 36 percent of voters earning more than $100,000 a year.

• Santorum won the votes of 41 percent of Alabamians who consider themselves “very conservative.” Romney only captured 18 percent.

• Of the voters who consider the federal budget deficit the most important issue, the most — 38 percent — supported Gingrich.

Editor’s note: Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum tied in Conecuh County in south Alabama. Each received 32 percent of votes cast.
