MOBILE (AP) — A homeless Alabama man was playing with the head of a decapitated venomous snake when it bit him, sending him to the emergency room.

Multiple media outlets report that residents of a Mobile homeless encampment chopped the head off of a snake that had crawled out of a creek on Wednesday.

Forty-one-year-old James McMahon put his finger in the snake's mouth when it bit him. WALA-TV reports that the snake was believed to be a cottonmouth.

McMahon tells the Press-Register of Mobile that he hid scared from EMTs until they left. However, paramedics were called back when McMahon began to show the effects of the venom.

McMahon was treated at the University of Southern Alabama Medical Center and released. He was able to return to the encampment by Wednesday afternoon.
