Re “Equal scholarship opportunity” (Speak Out, March 31):

As a former avid golfer and now an avid supporter of Jacksonville State University, I take exception to what letter writer Steve L. Greenwood suggests about JSU not offering athletic scholarships to local children.

He would have his readers believe that JSU is not interested in local student-athletes. I suggest that Greenwood may want to take a mulligan on his weak argument. First, we must accept that local student-athletes want to go to JSU, near their mom and dad. More important than hitting solid long irons, accurate wedge play and steady putting is academic performance and ACT and SAT scores. I feel Greenwood will incorrectly counter with an examination of JSU football and basketball student-athletes. Local students are well represented in all aspects of student life at JSU.

Have a nice day on the links, and here’s hoping you have an albatross (a double eagle — three under par). Now support and recognize what JSU students, coaches, faculty and administration contribute to the Jacksonville community. Go Gamecocks!
