When prospective tenants of a research/industrial park come calling, speed is often the deciding factor. Competition among prospective sites is fierce.

Businesses weigh their choices carefully, putting an emphasis on potential hosts’ efficiency in responding to relocation feelers.

Will a local government quickly produce a serious and balanced tax abatement package? Is local leadership on the same page in terms of a basic wish list for a community’s development? Will site development move smoothly or will it get lost in a thicket of bureaucracy?

On this last point, the McClellan Development Authority is wisely pushing a plan to put potential residents of the former fort on a fast track. If adopted, a process that can take weeks and months would be streamlined.

By setting up basic templates for building design, signage and landscaping, the city’s Planning Commission can serve as a one-stop shop for prospective clients.

What’s needed now is for the City Council to OK this fast-track process; it’s a matter to carefully consider and then rapidly approve.

Too much time has been wasted in developing McClellan. This common-sense idea by the MDA is a step in the right direction.
