Oxford police say the 17-year-old shot a 16-year-old boy at the park around 3:16 p.m. Lt. L.G. Owens of the Oxford Police Department said police police were unsure of the reason for any altercation that might have occurred between the teens.
The 16-year-old was taken to Regional Medical Center in Anniston. Around 5 p.m. today a group of people had gathered at the emergency room at RMC waiting on news about the victim's condition. None would comment on the incident.
Owens later said the 16-year old was in intensive care.
Owens would not say what type of weapon was used in the shooting or how many shots police believe were fired. He said police were informed of the incident by friends and family members of the victim.
Police searched for the 17-year-old suspected in the shooting for a few hours after the incident. Owens said the suspect’s brother brought him to the Oxford police station around 7:45 p.m., where the 17-year-old turned himself in.
After the 17-year-old's arrest, Owens said the boy faced an assault charge. Shortly after 10 p.m., Owens said the charge was being upgraded to attempted murder.
The 17-year-old is at the Calhoun County Jail, Owens said.
