A 17-year-old Oxford resident is in custody on an attempted murder charge, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Denzel Thomas Hicks was booked into Calhoun County jail at 11:22 p.m. Monday night, according to jail staff.

Oxford police said a 17-year-old boy shot a 16-year-old boy with a handgun at Coldwater Creek Park in Oxford around 3 p.m. Monday. The victim was taken to Regional Medical Center and was in intensive care at 9 a.m. today according to hospital staff.

Oxford police searched for the alleged shooter for a few hours after the incident. Lt. L.G. Owens said the 17-year-old turned himself in around 7:45 p.m. and was transported to the Calhoun County Jail.

No bond had been set for Hicks as of this morning.

Owens said police still are investigating the shooting and had not determined any motive for the shooting.
