A driver accidently killed a pedestrian crossing a street near downtown Heflin Sunday night, police said.

Lazoro Hernandez, 49, of Heflin, was struck by a car and killed near the intersection of Almond Road and U.S. 78, according to Heflin Police Chief Robert Pittman.

The death was ruled accidental and no charges were brought against the driver, Stewart Moore, Pittman said.

Pittman said Moore told police he'd had half a glass of wine at some point before driving. Moore passed a breathalyzer test given on the scene, Pittman said. Police are still waiting for results of a blood test.

“Everything was done appropriate,” Pittman said. “I was at the scene and everything was to the book.”

Pittman said the Heflin Police Department would release more information about the accident this afternoon.
