Darice Bowie, a former Anniston High School athletic standout, made history at Chattahoochee Tech College as she won the first ever CTC individual title at the Eastern Illinois University NJCAA Indoor National championship this March. Sophomore Darice Bowie won the women’s triple jump with an incredible mark of 12.09 meters (39 feet, 8 inches).

Bowie was ranked No.1 in the country as she came into the event, and she beat second place Ashley Reid (11.82 m, 38-9) of Johnson County Community College by close to a foot. This event was also Bowie’s second best of the year, as she had set the school record in the triple jump earlier in the season.

With this win, Bowie gained a first-team All-American status, which assisted in giving the women’s team their highest rank ever at indoor nationals (16th place). Head coach Steve Prettyman said, “Darice’s national title proves that the Golden Eagles teams have become competitive on a national level.”

Bowie started her college career at Bevill State Community College in Alabama but had to transfer to CTC last fall when Bevill did away with its athletic program.

Bowie is the daughter of Anniston native April Lewis, and the granddaughter of Lee G. Lewis Sr., and the late Theresa Lewis.
