Two men who police tried to stop for a minor traffic violation this morning are now in jail, charged with driving a stolen car, fleeing police and other crimes.

An Anniston police officer attempted to stop the car, allegedly being driven by Antoine Dorman, 24, of Anniston and carrying Carlton Welch, 45, of Oxford as a passenger, at about 8:30 this morning, according to Sgt. Nick Bowles, the patrol shift supervisor.

Instead of stopping, the car sped away, and after a brief pursuit it crashed into a ditch at the intersection of 14th Street and Woodstock Avenue, Bowles said. The men inside fled on foot, though officers caught up to Welch. Dorman was found hiding in nearby yard a short time later.

Bowles said the car was later discovered to have been stolen from an Anniston resident, though its owner was not aware of that at the time of the crash. Dorman was taken to Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released, Bowles said. The car was “totally disabled,” according to a police report.

Dorman and Welch both are charged with first-degree receipt of stolen property, fleeing and attempting to elude police, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were in the Anniston City Jail this afternoon. No bond had been set
