Anniston police Monday were investigating a Sunday shooting that happened in a Noble Street convenience store parking lot, sending a woman to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

Michael Anthony Brown, 23, of Anniston is charged with felony first-degree assault for allegedly shooting a 38-year-old woman between 4:30 and 5:15 p.m. Sunday at a Discount Food Mart, according to a police press release.

The woman, a Saks resident, was shot in the chest and first taken to Regional Medical Center for treatment, Sgt. Josh Doggrell said.

Later Sunday night, she was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, but police Monday had no information on her condition.

Brown and the victim weren’t acquainted, Doggrell said. But the sergeant said feuding “between two groups of people” had been going on all day in west Anniston. It’s possible, he said, the shooting was related to those on-going arguments.

Doggrell declined to identify the groups of people involved in the arguments or say whether the feuding was gang-related.

The shooting investigation is far from over: Police are still searching for other suspects and expect to make additional arrests in the case, Doggrell said.

Investigators arrived at the Discount Food Mart minutes after the shooting occurred Sunday. Two crime scenes have been processed – one at the convenience store parking lot and another at a residence in the 100 block of West 20th Street.

Brown posted a $15,000 bail bond Monday and was released from the Anniston City Jail, according to police records.

His initial court date is set for May 21.
