Millions of gallons of water are mixed with suspected cancer-causing chemicals and pumped in the ground under high hydraulic pressure to bust the shale rock and release the natural gas trapped there. Good deal, right?
Wrong! When horses’ and cows’ hides start to whelp and bleed, something is wrong. When farmers have to travel up to one day to buy and retrieve 2,000 gallons of clean water, something is wrong. When people’s wells that have been clean for a lifetime are suddenly polluted, something is wrong. When the water from your faucet will burn when a match is put to it, something is definitely wrong.
In 2005, Dick Cheney and his cronies pushed through a bill that exempts these companies that drill from the Clean Water, Clean Air Act. Next, the Bureau of Land Management finally tells the public who, by the way, owns the National Forests, that they will sell the gas and oil rights to these companies.
