After more than five hours of deliberation, jurors in the murder trial for Jacquindalyn Carr, 36, handed over a guilty verdict to Calhoun County Circuit Judge Malcolm Street for the lesser charge of manslaughter. Carr faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail. She was being held on a $40,000 bond.
Carr fatally stabbed her husband, Demetrious, in the neck with a steak knife during a domestic dispute at their home on Maumee Drive on May 2, 2010. The woman claimed she was acting in self-defense, but prosecutors this week pushed for a murder conviction.
Calhoun County Assistant District Attorney Sheila Field said she was satisfied with the verdict and praised the jurors for their time and effort.
“I have complete confidence in the jury system,” she said. “If they feel we hadn’t proven enough that this was murder, but we did prove this is manslaughter, then I am pleased with their decision.”
Carr’s attorney, Wilford Lane, however, called the verdict “very disappointing.” Lane said he will have to wait until after sentencing to decide if he’ll appeal the decision.
A sentencing hearing for Carr is scheduled for 2 p.m. May 16. Field said she will ask that Carr receive the maximum sentence of 20 years.
