A man was in stable but critical condition at UAB Hospital Thursday after being struck by a car while crossing a road in Anniston, police said.

Anniston police Capt. Shane Denham said a man was hit by a white 1996 Toyota Avalon heading south on Quintard Avenue at 2:22 p.m. Thursday near the intersection at B Street. The man was attempting to cross to the east side of the road when he was struck by the car traveling on the inside lane on the west side, Denham said.

“The pedestrian basically darted out in front of it,” Denham said. “The driver was trying to brake, but she was still braking when he got hit.”

The pedestrian entered the passenger side of the car through the windshield upon collision, Denham said.

Denham said the man suffered multiple fractures and his condition was “pretty serious” as of 5 p.m. Thursday.

The woman driving the car sustained minor injuries and was transported to Regional Medical Center, Denham said. Her condition was unknown.

There is no indication the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Denham said.

Police declined to release the names of the driver or the pedestrian Thursday until after family members had been notified.
