Thursday, the state’s House Ways and Means Education committee put the idea out of its misery. However, the fatal blow happened in the Senate.
Charter schools are public schools where some standards are relaxed in hopes of producing better-educated students. This page supports the theory behind them.
What came out of the Senate was a Frankenstein’s monster version of charters hardly worth the effort. It was loaded with restrictions — they were limited to Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery and Mobile — and other mandates that go against the spirit of charter schools.
Alabama parents deserve the option of charter schools. It seems this year those parents took a backseat to the state’s education interests.
