I read letter after letter in The Star from people seemingly following their leaders at Fox News and reciting the speaking points provided. Can we please look at facts and turn off the TV?
The U.S. Secret Service is not “Obama’s” Secret Service. It was founded in 1865. It began full-time protection of all presidents in 1902. The recent behavior, drunken or otherwise, of the Secret Service agents in Colombia or that of any member of the U.S. armed services is a reflection of that American and our society as a whole, but it is not a reflection of the current president.
President Clinton was not blamed when a sailor and two Marines from a Marine Corps base on Okinawa were found guilty of kidnapping and raping a 12-year-old Japanese girl in September 1995. President George H. W. Bush was not blamed in 1991 when 140 Navy and Marine Corps officers were accused by the Pentagon of sexual misconduct during the annual Tailhook convention in Nevada. President George W. Bush said finding Osama bin Laden was not a priority. President Obama said it was and he directed the CIA to find him, then the Navy SEALS to end the threat that was bin Laden. He also made the more risky decision to physically capture bin Laden and the treasure trove of intelligence on him, allowing the further dismantling of al-Qaida.
Despite what is broadcast on the commercial airwaves masquerading as news, there is nothing unseemly in President Obama’s actions. Thoughtful, courageous and moral leadership is what I see when I look at what he has done. I intend to vote in November based on what I see happening, not on what I am told is happening.
