The holiday weekend turned tragic in Cherokee County after a drowning death at Lake Weiss in Leesburg.

The body of Paul Clark Cooke, 50, was recovered by the Cherokee County Rescue Service at 4:41 p.m. on Monday, according to Cherokee County Coroner Broderick Smith.

Smith said Cooke had been living in Cedar Bluff for several months but was originally from Illinois. The coroner said Cooke’s family is making arrangements to send his remains back to Illinois.

The Star’s attempts to reach the Leesburg Police Department, which handled the investigation, were unsuccessful.
