Workers installed flashing lights and warning signs Thursday near the intersection of Henry Road and Veterans Memorial Parkway in Golden Springs.
Construction on extending the bypass might have halted, but it doesn’t mean the parkway has become dormant. Workers Thursday installed two solar-powered “flashers” on the bypass on either side of the intersection with Henry Road near Golden Springs.
Two yellow flashing lights in either direction are designed to give drivers the heads-up that cars might be merging on to the parkway.
“Just extra safety,” said James Brown, who was installing the flasher facing traffic heading towards Oxford. “Just reminding people there’s an intersection here.”
The two flashers installed on the bypass Thursday will be joined next week by a similar device on Henry Road, marking all three entry points to the intersection.
Numbers indicating how dangerous the intersection might be weren’t available from the Anniston Police Department Thursday, but at least two accidents have occurred at the road merger this year.
In 2010, Anniston had 1,361 crashes resulting in three deaths, according to the Center for Advanced Public Safety at the University of Alabama.
A study by the U.S. Department of Transportation said that the state of Florida estimated in 2010 there was a 26 percent reduction in car crashes at intersection where flashing markers were installed and almost 50 percent reduction in injury inducing crashes.
