Police are investigating a series of shootings in Anniston on Sunday, one of which involved a man getting shot in the leg, according to Anniston police.

A 28-year-old Jacksonville resident was shot by an unknown assailant on Rocky Hollow Road around 3 p.m. Sunday, according to a police report.

Anniston police Lt. Fred Forsythe said an officer was patrolling the area when he heard gunshots. While trying to locate where the noise was coming from he found the victim on the ground with a gunshot wound to the leg, he said.

Forsythe said the victim told the officer he was talking on the phone when a vehicle drove by and opened fire on him.

The victim was taken to Stringfellow Memorial Hospital; he was expected to survive his injuries, according to Forsythe. The victim did not indicate he knew who shot him.

Forsythe said police believe the shooting may be linked to several others in west Anniston on Sunday. Two apartments and five cars at the Norwood Homes apartments on 29th Street had been fired at during the day resulting in over $2,000 in damage, according to police reports.

“It’s a good possibility they’re all related,” Forsythe said. “We can’t know until we catch someone, but it’s possible they may have been targeting specific places, but we can’t make that assumption at this time.”
