Police are investigating an alleged rape that took place in Anniston more than 30 years ago, according to a police report.

Anniston police Sgt. Josh Doggrell said a woman, now 48, told investigators Friday she was forcibly raped by someone she knew as a teenager in Anniston sometime in 1978 or 1979.

The woman no longer lives in the city, Doggrell said.

Doggrell said it is unclear why the woman had chosen to report the incident more than three decades later, but that the time frame will make the case “much harder” to investigate.

“We may be dealing with something where our only evidence is her testimony,” Doggrell said.
